Many opt out of the draft, but some openly refuse.
The number of Israelis who openly refuse military service due to the occupation is small; Earlier this year, four teens who refused together were remarkable. The small number remains despite the recognition of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians as apartheid by many international human rights groups. Now, the army’s violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank is at a peak not seen in years, Israel’s far-right government is still on the verge of taking power, and draft refuser organizations say what they saw There has been an increased interest in going, regarded by most Israelis as a radical move. We hear from the two men why they did it, and why their decision is so rare.
