We finally know the fateful date for the MG4 the Tesla Model 3 and the Dacia Spring The government is fine-tuning its ecological bonus system for 2024 for electric cars and explains that we will have to wait until mid-December to find out the list of vehicles that will be eligible. If you are interested in the idea of buying an electric car produced in China (MG4, Tesla Model 3, etc.), a piece of advice: don’t wait.
We could also tell you right away that if you’re considering an MG4 or a Tesla Model Y, you better quickly decide to take a look at it. With the new ecological bonus system for 2024, there is a possibility that you will no longer be entitled to the government boost. Unless some manufacturers find a solution.
While we wait precisely for the calculation method that will be implemented in order to benefit – or not – from the future bonus, the government continues to drop information here and there about the sauce with which they will eat consumers from the next. January 1st. Following the announcements by the Minister of Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, at the beginning of the month, it is the turn of the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, to share his new information: the list of electric cars that will be eligible for the 2024 bonus They will be known on December 15.
60 points minimum
Let us remember that the 2024 bonus for the purchase of an electric car will no longer be based solely on the price of the car (less than 47,000 euros) or its weight (less than 2.4 tons). From now on, a whole series of environmental criteria will be taken into account that will allow each vehicle to be given an environmental score. A way to look at the entire life cycle of the car and have a more global vision of the polluting emissions that the car induces from its manufacturing to its arrival on the road.
Materials, production, factory electrical supply, type of battery, transportation… These are criteria that must be taken into account in the complex calculation that will give rise to the score that will be awarded to each model. We already know that you will have to achieve a minimum score of 60 points out of 80 to be eligible for the new bonus.
Stop the import of cars produced in China
While waiting for Ademe (Ecological Transition Agency) to analyze each model of an electric car that is sold or will be sold here, starting this Tuesday, September 19, 2023, we will know the decree and order that regulate the environmental criteria chosen since will publish in the Official Gazette.

Obviously, this new method has its advantages and disadvantages. Although it is particularly complex, it allows us to favor vehicles with a lower carbon footprint.
Although this calculation method is pioneering in Europe, it adds to the current trend that tries to stop Chinese imports. Although here it is obviously more subtle (calculation of emissions from factories, often fueled by coal in China or those linked to transport to home), while Ursula van der Leyen, president of the European Commission, has just announced the opening of an investigation into the subsidies that Chinese cars benefit from in their country and that artificially reduce prices in our country. Which could result in higher customs fees.
As for the amount of the bonus, in this case, too it remains a mystery, although Agnès Pannier-Runacher had spoken of a “reinforcement” of the bonus, which could be interpreted as an increase. Continued with the next episode.
