According to the Ministry of Railways, last year (2022-23) about 3.6 crore people traveled by train without ticket. It is learned that a fine of Rs 2200 crore has been imposed on him. This was the reply by the Railway Department on a petition filed by Chandrashekhar Gaur, an RTI activist from the state of Madhya Pradesh.
Railway officials said that in 2019-20, 1.10 crore people were traveling without tickets. This number will reach 2.7 crore people in 2021-22. Railway officials revealed that a fine of Rs 1574 crore has been collected in 2021-22 from the passengers caught in this way. Before that, due to the effect of Corona epidemic, 32.56 lakh passengers had traveled without tickets. A fine of Rs 152 crore was collected from them.
Meanwhile, the interesting thing is that those who had bought tickets could not travel. It has been found that more than 2.7 crore passengers could not travel in 2022-23 as their tickets were waiting list. It may be known that this situation exists in trains full of passengers on many routes across the country.
Those traveling by train without ticket will have to pay an additional fine of Rs 250 along with the cost of the ticket. If the fine is not paid, it will be handed over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF). RPF personnel will appear before the judge after registering a case under Section 137 of the Railway Act. The judge will impose a fine of Rs.1000. Passengers who do not pay the fine will have to undergo imprisonment for six months.
