Prince William met Pete Malinowski, CEO and co-founder of the Billion Oyster Project at the island’s marina. The Prince of Wales made his visit surrounded by students from the New Harbor School. The students know by heart the island that serves as their main place of study during their practical work in a marine environment. A few days ago, the students had been informed that they would receive a visit from a personality. They had been given little information and many thought it would be President Joe Biden who would make an appearance. “It was shocking! “It’s not something I expected.”Kynara told Town & Country magazine after discovering the identity of her visitor.

With his feet in the water and in the rain, Prince William becomes interested in oyster reefs
During the visit, Prince William toured an oyster farm and saw the mountain of oyster shells donated by New York City restaurants. These shells are then used as a resource for oyster reef restoration. “It is a very good use of food waste”said William, looking at the pile. Oyster reefs are one of the methods used in the United States to create artificial reefs from natural waste. The piles of shells become new reefs once placed in the water. Reefs are very important elements of the marine ecosystem since they serve as a place of life for all types of living organisms that cling to them.

Prince William also donned a wetsuit and joined another group of younger students on the Hudson River. The weather was not good for this first day in New York. In the rain and with his feet in the water, the eldest son of King Charles III checked out a reef in Brooklyn Bridge Park. These younger students, high school students, study at Harbor School. Billion Oyster Project works to restore New York Bay’s reefs by engaging several partner schools through educational programs.
