UNUSUAL – It is a show that is well worth spending a sleepless night in. The northern lights could be observed in the skies of Canada and the United States on the night of Monday, September 18 to Tuesday, September 19, due to a class G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm.
The light show can usually be admired much further north or south, near the Earth’s magnetic poles. But during a magnetic storm it is possible to see the northern lights dancing at lower latitudes, as happened last night in places as far away as the state of Missouri, further south than France.
Many Canadians and Americans have caught the green lights, sometimes tending towards pink, as we can see in the video that heads the article.
The magnetic storm was caused by coronal mass ejection (CME) during the eruption of a solar filament on September 16. When an EMC heads toward Earth, it typically takes several days to arrive and then triggers a geomagnetic storm, which in turn gives rise to polar auroras.
This chain reaction is the perfect opportunity to see the Northern Lights without having to travel to the Nordic countries. Last February and April, the phenomenon could be observed even in France, in Poitou, Burgundy and even Brittany.
