New method to search for missing people: Drones and aircraft with laser technology that search areas indicating burials

A technology known as Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) can detect subtle disturbances several decades in advance.

The Technical University of Uruguay (UTEC) and the Ministry of Defense carried out a program to search for the missing thanks to the National Institute for Human Rights (INDHH). It uses laser technology which allows aerial mapping of areas where there are signs of burial.

It is drones and aircraft equipped with this technology that carry out flights that make it possible to track whether changes have occurred on the Earth’s surface, no matter how small. A technology known as Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) can detect subtle disturbances several decades in advance.

according to weekly SearchINDDHH had managed the use of this technology with the Ministry of Defense – in charge of operating both surveying drones and aircraft – and joined UTEC to plan and analyze them.

“In June of this year, the first estimates were made. The Air Force approached us with human rights to start testing these technologies, from there surveys were conducted in defined sites and these tests progressed to other potential sites by 2023. allowed”, Natalie Aubet, a professor at UTEC, told Telemundo.

According to the data of the Ministry of Defense, there are more than ten preliminary surveys. Portfolio sources indicated that the institute had originally requested that the survey be carried out by an Argentine university, but given that in most cases they are military premises where searches are carried out and that Uruguay already has There is a technique offered to do. through this collaboration.

“Lidar is a very precise technology for topographic surveys,” Aubet said.

In this sense, he indicated that what is shown is the surface. “The lidar is so precise that it allows you to identify subtle differences in the surface,” he said, adding that when soil is removed and re-laid, the surface is not the same as it was before. “Those are removals that we intend to identify,” he said.

This is complemented with other techniques that allow us to see and compare how the vegetation is on one side and the other. “We put technologies in place but at the same time we have to feed it to identify those differences,” he said.
