FIFA forecast record earnings of $11,000 million (10,343 million euros) in its next four-year cycle in which it will take the 48 teams to the 2026 World Cup, its president Gianni Infantino announced on Friday. , specifying that the format of the tournament has not been decided.
The FIFA Council, meeting in Doha this Friday with two days left for Argentina and France to play the World Cup final, accepted an increased budget with an income of $11,000 million for the 2023-2026 cycle.
The income in the current cycle (2019–2022) was $7,500 million (7,200 million euros), with the World Cup citing 32 teams.
The World Cup, one of Infantino’s most significant reforms, will move to 48 countries in 2026, when the tournament will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. This extension has been known since 2017 and will modify several participants that have been in force since France-1998.
This would increase the number of matches in the competition (currently 64) and the income from television rights which helps FIFA derive most of its income.
In the current cycle, a figure of $7,500 million emerged on November 20, surpassing the initial estimate of $1,000 million, “something very remarkable,” according to Infantino, in a period marked by the pandemic.
