Brittany Griner said she is “grateful” to be back in the United States and plans to play basketball again next season for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA. His comments came a week after he was released from a Russian prison, freed in a dramatic high-profile prisoner exchange.
“It feels so good to be home!” Griner posted on Instagram Friday in his first public statement since his release. “The last 10 months have been a battle in every way. I searched deep within to keep my faith and it was the love of so many of you that kept me going. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for your help.”
Griner confirmed that “I intend to play basketball for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA this season, and in doing so, I look forward to saying ‘thank you’ to those of you who have signed up for me early.” advocated, wrote and published.”
The Phoenix Mercury began the season on May 19 against the Los Angeles Sparks on the road. The team’s first home game is against the Chicago Sky two days later.
Griner has been staying at a hotel at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio since his return. He met with members of his family, including his wife, Cheryl.
