NHRC will send investigation team to Bihar
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has decided to send a spot investigation team headed by one of its members to investigate the matter. The death toll in Saran district after drinking spurious liquor increased to 30 on Friday.
This is the biggest incident of its kind since liquor was banned in Bihar six years ago. The NHRC said in a statement that amid reports of more deaths due to spurious liquor in Bihar, the commission “has decided to send a team headed by one of its members to the spot for investigation”.
Politics deep on deaths
Amidst investigation and action by the authorities, the matter is getting politicized and the opposition is leaving no stone unturned to attack the Nitish Kumar-led state government. Jamui MP and Lok Jan Shakti Party chief Chirag Paswan met the Governor on Saturday and handed over a memorandum regarding this issue. Chirag lashed out at Nitish Kumar as soon as he came out of the governor’s house.
CM Nitish Kumar on compensation
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Friday that no compensation would be given to those who died recently in the state after consuming spurious liquor. Addressing the state assembly on the issue of prohibition in Bihar, the CM said that he has been appealing to the people that they will die if they drink alcohol.
He said, ‘If you die after drinking alcohol and think that we will give compensation, it is not going to happen.’
#watch , “No compensation will be given to those who die after drinking… We have been appealing- if you drink, you will die… Those who talk in favor of drinking will do you no good.. .”, said CM Nitish Kumar in the assembly today.
