Amazon and Tolkien Estate turn on litigious fanfiction author
In April 2023, Californian Demetrious Polychron accused Amazon and JRR Tolkien’s rights holders of having plagiarized his fanfiction work, The King’s Community his series with a record budget, The Rings of Power. He demanded compensation of 250 million dollars. The US courts rejected his complaint, finding no obvious copyright violation. But the matter does not end there: Amazon and the Tolkien Estate counterattacked, calling Polychron’s work plagiarism by Tolkien. They demand $153,000 in legal costs… and denounce the commercialization of this fanfiction. Discretion is often the mother of security…
